It only takes one mosquito bite for your dog to get heartworm. Now it only takes one Proheart 12 injection to ensure your dog has one full year of constant heartworm prevention.

On July 16th of 2019 Zoetis, the largest global animal health company, announced that the United States FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approved Proheart 12, also known as Moxidectin, as a new annual injection to prevent heartworm disease in dogs 12 months of age and older. Results of three studies showed that ProHeart 12 was 100 percent effective against heartworm disease as the slow-dissolving microspheres contained in the injection were released over 12 months and stored in the dog’s adipose tissue, or fat.

So why do dogs need to be protected against heartworms in the first place?

Heartworm disease is a life threatening disease that can be contracted year-round. Although it is not common to see a mosquito in the colder months, the threat of your dog getting infected is still there. Infected mosquitoes can survive the cold in apartments, public buildings, parking lots that retain heat, and other temperature controlled locations.

The transmission of heartworm disease is a cycle. When a female mosquito ingests the blood of an infected host, that mosquito ends up ingesting immature (larval) stages of  heartworms. Within two weeks the infected mosquito can become riddled with larvae, which then travel to the mosquito’s mouth. When the infected mosquito bites your dog, the larvae then enter your dog’s blood stream.  The larvae become juvenile adults in the blood vessels of the lungs, and develop into adult heartworms. In about six to nine months after the initial mosquito bite, the infected dog will have adult heartworms entering and living in the heart and pulmonary vessels.

The long-term effects of heartworm can be severe causing lasting heart, lung, and organ damage. If your pet is infected and not treated heartworm disease can cause death.

                             Benefits of ProHeart 12

Month-to-month prevention means you have 12 chances to forget to dose your pet. Zoetis found that almost 6 out of 10 dog owners either did not give their dogs monthly heartworm prevention or skipped doses. Monthly heartworm medications work by killing heartworm larvae that may have been passed to your dog the month before. This means that if a month is missed and your pet has been bitten, there is a chance the heartworm larvae could survive and grow into adult worms. With ProHeart 12 the risk of missing a dose is eliminated.

ProHeart 12 allows you to say goodbye to some of your worries, and put your mind at ease with convenient, effective, and proven heartworm prevention.
